Distribution SMEs face unique challenges, such as managing diverse inventories, complex logistics, and fluctuating demand. It is a myth that optimization requires massive technological investments. In reality, significant improvements can be achieved with smart strategies and process adjustments.

The Core Challenges for Distribution SMEs:

  • High inventory holding costs.
  • Inefficient warehouse operations, including picking, packing, and shipping.
  • Suboptimal transportation routes and costs.
  • Lack of visibility into stock and shipments.
  • Customer service issues due to delays or errors.

Strategies for Optimization Without Breaking the Bank:

  • Process Streamlining (Lean Principles): Identify and eliminate waste in receiving, put-away, picking, packing, and shipping. Mapping your current processes, identifying bottlenecks, and simplifying steps can lead to reduced labor costs, faster throughput, fewer errors, and improved space utilization. Implementing 5S in the warehouse is a good way to do this.
  • Smart Inventory Management: The goal is to balance inventory levels to meet demand without excessive holding costs. You can implement ABC analysis to prioritize stock, improve forecasting accuracy, and optimize reorder points. For fast-moving items, consider cross-docking. These actions can result in lower carrying costs, reduced obsolescence, improved cash flow, and better service levels.
  • Collaborative Supplier & Customer Relationships: Leverage relationships to improve efficiency upstream and downstream. Work with key suppliers on lead time reduction or just-in-time deliveries, and collaborate with key customers on delivery schedules or order patterns. This can lead to reduced inventory buffers, more predictable operations, and stronger partnerships.
  • Low-Cost Technology & Data Utilization: Use existing data and affordable tools to gain insights. Leverage basic spreadsheet analysis for demand patterns and explore affordable cloud-based WMS/TMS solutions designed for SMEs. You can also use existing ERP data more effectively. These steps can lead to better decision-making, improved visibility, and gradual digital transformation.

I believe that it is healthy laziness that moves the world and business forward, and I am always ready to help find the most effective and appropriate solutions concerning strategic and change management, as well as various efficiency solutions in office work.

As a practicing consultant in Latvia, I already have 20 years of experience in various fields related to the optimization of organizational management:

  • I can help with advice on implementing the Balanced Scorecard system,
  • I have experience in creating IT and document management system modernization strategies,
  • I am a certified European ergonomist, and therefore we can work together on modern office solutions that both increase work efficiency and create comfortable and health-friendly workplaces.

I am constantly updating my knowledge both informally – following everything new in my areas of competence, and also formally: I have master’s degrees in pedagogy, economics, nutrition science, and modeling of sociotechnical systems. In 2021, I was a full-time student again for 1 semester – at the University of Buffalo (USA).

It is this unique “set” that allows me to view various processes, trends, and organizational needs holistically, offering realistic and at the same time modern solutions.

I also share my experience with students of various Latvian universities, I have given lectures in Lithuania, Germany, and Moldova as part of the Erasmus+ program, as well as participated in the international Sail program.

I also like to conduct corporate training.
