For Supply Chain Managers in mid-sized distribution and logistics companies, navigating fragmented processes and a lack of real-time visibility is a constant battle. Not knowing where inventory is, when a shipment will arrive, or what risks are emerging can lead to costly delays, stockouts, and dissatisfied customers. At UPKAIZEN, we specialize in transforming these complex supply chain challenges into opportunities for increased efficiency and profitability.

Achieving true real-time supply chain visibility is no longer a luxury; it’s a necessity. Here’s how to move beyond the blind spots:

1. Digitize Key Data Capture Points

Many supply chain blind spots originate from manual data entry or disconnected systems. Digitizing key data capture points (e.g., goods receipt, dispatch, in-transit milestones) provides immediate and accurate information. This can involve using mobile scanning devices, simple apps, or integrating data directly from supplier/3PL systems.

Actionable Tip: Identify 2-3 critical data points where information is currently manual or delayed. Explore simple digital solutions (e.g., barcode scanning with a mobile app, automated email notifications from suppliers/3PLs upon dispatch) to capture this data in real-time.

2. Implement a Control Tower Approach (Simplified for SMEs)

A “control tower” in supply chain management provides a centralized hub for real-time data, analytics, and decision-making. For SMEs, this doesn’t require complex software. It can be a dedicated dashboard (e.g., in Google Sheets or Power BI) that integrates data from various sources (ERP, WMS, carrier portals) to offer a holistic view of the supply chain.

Actionable Tip: Identify your most critical KPIs (e.g., on-time delivery, inventory levels, freight costs). Build a simple, automated dashboard that pulls data from your existing systems into one place, providing a single source of truth for decision-making.

3. Foster Collaborative Data Sharing with Key Partners

Visibility extends beyond your four walls. Collaborating with key suppliers and 3PL partners to share data (e.g., production schedules, shipment tracking, inventory levels) can unlock unprecedented transparency. This requires trust and often involves secure data exchange platforms or simple API integrations.

Actionable Tip: Start with 1-2 critical suppliers or 3PLs. Discuss the benefits of data sharing for both parties (e.g., improved forecasting for suppliers, better planning for you). Explore secure, low-cost methods for sharing information (e.g., shared cloud spreadsheets, basic EDI).

By systematically implementing these strategies, supply chain managers can gain real-time visibility, reduce operational complexities, and drive significant improvements in efficiency and delivery. UPKAIZEN provides the pragmatic guidance to help logistics companies transform their supply chains into proactive, optimized systems.

I believe that it is healthy laziness that moves the world and business forward, and I am always ready to help find the most effective and appropriate solutions concerning strategic and change management, as well as various efficiency solutions in office work.

As a practicing consultant in Latvia, I already have 20 years of experience in various fields related to the optimization of organizational management:

  • I can help with advice on implementing the Balanced Scorecard system,
  • I have experience in creating IT and document management system modernization strategies,
  • I am a certified European ergonomist, and therefore we can work together on modern office solutions that both increase work efficiency and create comfortable and health-friendly workplaces.

I am constantly updating my knowledge both informally – following everything new in my areas of competence, and also formally: I have master’s degrees in pedagogy, economics, nutrition science, and modeling of sociotechnical systems. In 2021, I was a full-time student again for 1 semester – at the University of Buffalo (USA).

It is this unique “set” that allows me to view various processes, trends, and organizational needs holistically, offering realistic and at the same time modern solutions.

I also share my experience with students of various Latvian universities, I have given lectures in Lithuania, Germany, and Moldova as part of the Erasmus+ program, as well as participated in the international Sail program.

I also like to conduct corporate training.
