For manufacturing leaders, the daily grind of production often overshadows the strategic goal of boosting overall plant profitability. Inefficiencies on the shop floor, hidden costs, and a lack of clear metrics can erode margins, even for busy operations. At UPKAIZEN, we believe that true operational excellence isn’t just about theory; it’s about implementing pragmatic Lean Digital solutions that translate directly into measurable financial gains within 6 months.

Here’s how manufacturing SMEs can practically optimize their processes to significantly increase profitability:

1. Implement Digital Gemba Walks for Real-Time Insights

Traditional Gemba walks involve physically observing the shop floor. Digital Gemba leverages mobile devices and simple apps to capture real-time data on production issues, downtime, and waste directly at the source. This provides immediate visibility into operational inefficiencies, allowing for faster problem-solving and more accurate data collection.

Actionable Tip: Equip supervisors or team leaders with tablets. Develop a simple digital checklist or form to log observations, machine statuses, and reasons for stoppages. Use this data in daily stand-up meetings to address issues proactively.

2. Focus on OEE (Overall Equipment Effectiveness) for Machine Optimization

For manufacturers, machine uptime and efficiency are paramount. Overall Equipment Effectiveness (OEE) is a golden metric that measures how effectively a manufacturing operation is utilized. It accounts for Availability (downtime), Performance (speed), and Quality (defects). Improving OEE directly impacts throughput and reduces per-unit costs.

Actionable Tip: Start by tracking OEE for one critical machine or production line. Identify the biggest “loss” (e.g., frequent small stops, quality defects). Implement targeted Lean interventions (e.g., Quick Changeover/SMED, Total Productive Maintenance) to address that specific loss.

3. Leverage Digital Tools for Lean Implementation (Lean Digital)

Many SMEs hesitate to adopt Lean due to perceived complexity or lack of resources. Lean Digital combines proven Lean principles with accessible digital tools (like simple analytics dashboards, collaborative platforms, or basic automation) to accelerate implementation and make results visible. This helps bridge the gap between strategic vision and practical execution, ensuring technology investments yield clear ROI.

Actionable Tip: Use Google Sheets or a simple dashboard tool to track key Lean metrics (e.g., lead time, defect rate, inventory turns). Implement digital Kanban boards (e.g., in Trello or ClickUp) to visualize workflow and manage tasks across teams.

By embedding these practical operational excellence strategies, manufacturing SMEs can systematically eliminate inefficiencies, reduce waste, and directly boost their plant’s profitability. UPKAIZEN provides the expertise to guide these transformations, ensuring tangible results and a clear ROI within 6 months.

I believe that it is healthy laziness that moves the world and business forward, and I am always ready to help find the most effective and appropriate solutions concerning strategic and change management, as well as various efficiency solutions in office work.

As a practicing consultant in Latvia, I already have 20 years of experience in various fields related to the optimization of organizational management:

  • I can help with advice on implementing the Balanced Scorecard system,
  • I have experience in creating IT and document management system modernization strategies,
  • I am a certified European ergonomist, and therefore we can work together on modern office solutions that both increase work efficiency and create comfortable and health-friendly workplaces.

I am constantly updating my knowledge both informally – following everything new in my areas of competence, and also formally: I have master’s degrees in pedagogy, economics, nutrition science, and modeling of sociotechnical systems. In 2021, I was a full-time student again for 1 semester – at the University of Buffalo (USA).

It is this unique “set” that allows me to view various processes, trends, and organizational needs holistically, offering realistic and at the same time modern solutions.

I also share my experience with students of various Latvian universities, I have given lectures in Lithuania, Germany, and Moldova as part of the Erasmus+ program, as well as participated in the international Sail program.

I also like to conduct corporate training.
